‘비웃다’표현할 땐 make fun of

These days, many young people become ruder and ruder. In the old days, many people keep the rule to treat the old. But now, even in my class room, the rule doesn't keep. I think this situation begin a few years ago. The strong people to make obey the week people. For example, one of my classmate's body is too big and she has high weight. she sometimes bother more weeker than her. But more fatter than her, she can't bother them. And my math teacher is a little bit old. Maybe 50? or 53? so we must respect him and don't make fun with him. But in the math class, many classmates don't listen what he says,?and say bad word to him. If i heard like that severly word, I feel not good. so?I will not be like those rude guys.(김원지/통영 충무여중 3학년)

■문장 들여다보기(지난 주에서 이어집니다.)

she sometimes bother more weeker than her.

주어가 3인칭 단수이므로 ‘bother’를 ‘bothers’로 고쳐 주자. 또 동사 ‘bothers’ 뒤에 목적어가 나와야 하므로 이 문장은 적절한 표현이 아니다. 올바른 표현은 “She sometimes bothers students weaker than herself.”가 된다. ‘약하다’는 week이 아니라 ‘weak’이다.

But more fatter than her, she can't bother them.

전달하고자 하는 의미는 어느 정도 파악이 되나 이 또한 정확한 문장은 아니다. 주어 ‘she’를 문장 맨 앞에 쓰고 앞서 사용한 동사 ‘bother’를 그대로 써서 “But she doesn't bother students bigger than herself.”라고 하는 것이 자연스럽다. 앞의 문장과 같은 문장 구조를 사용해 서로 상반되는 의미를 전달해 주는 것이 매번 다른 문장 구조로 쓰는 것보다 훨씬 효과적으로 의미를 전달할 수 있다는 것을 기억해 두자.

And my math teacher is a little bit old. Maybe 50? or 53?

수학 선생님의 나이가 많다는 뜻인데 문장 맨 처음에 있는 ‘and’만 생략하면 아주 훌륭하다. 선생님의 나이를 추측한 표현에서 나이 뒤에 물음표는 쓰지 않는다.

so we must respect him and don't make fun with him.

‘so’는 생략하고 주어 ‘We’로 시작하는 것이 좋다. ‘놀리다’, ‘비웃다’는 뜻의 숙어는 ‘make fun of’로, 이 문장처럼 부정을 표현할 때는 앞의 'must'와 연결해 ‘not'을 붙여 사용한다. 따라서 “We must respect him and not make fun of him.”이 옳다.

But in the math class, many classmates don't listen what he says, and say bad word to him.

‘수학 시간에’라는 표현에서 정관사 ‘the’는 필요 없다. ‘~을 듣다’는 표현은 ‘listen to'로 쓴다.

If i heard like that severly word, I feel not good.

우선 ‘i’를 대문자로 바꾸어 주자. 그리고 이 문장은 ‘if’가 아닌 ‘내가 만약 ~한다면’의 의미를 가진 접속사 ‘when’으로 시작하는 것이 바람직하고, 이때 동사는 현재형이 되어 “When I hear those words”로 고쳐야 한다. ‘기분이 좋지 않다’는 표현은 ‘I feel terrible’이다.

so I will not be like those rude guys.
