‘이틀 뒤면’은 ‘in two days’

Two days later…

Two days later, I will in the third grade.

After I entered a middle school, I thought not much time went on, but before I know, I’m in the third grade.

It is unbelievable and even novel. however on the other hand, I throb fast. During winter vacation, I only attended English and Math institute, but some of my friends studied at an institute almost twelve hours in a day!

I realized, I’m so lazy till now. So, from now on, I made up my mind to study harder. (김여진/고양 정발중학교 3학년)

■ 전반적 평가

중학교에 입학한 지 얼마 안 된 것 같은데 벌써 3학년이 되는 것에 대한 필자 자신의 감정이 잘 드러나 있는 글이다. 적절한 영어 표현을 좀더 익히면 얼마든지 좋은 문장을 쓸 수 있게 되리라 본다.

■ 문장 들여다보기

Two days later…

‘이틀 뒤면’이란 뜻인데 이런 경우 접속사 ‘in’을 사용하여 ‘in two days’라고 표현하는 것이 정확하다.

Two days later, I will in the third grade.

‘Two days later’는 ‘In two days’로 바꾸어 주자. ‘3학년이 된다’는 문장에서는 동사 ‘start’를 사용해 ‘I will start the third grade of middle school.’이라고 표현하자. 우리의 학년제가 영미권 문화와는 차이가 있으므로 3학년이 중학교인지 고등학교인지 구분해 주는 것이 정확하다.

‘중학교에 입학하고 나서는’이라는 표현은 ‘when’을 써 ‘When I began middle school’로 표현하고 그 뒤의 문장은 접속사 ‘that’을 넣어 ‘I thought that not much time had passed.’라고 뒤에 콤마가 아닌 마침표를 찍어 문장을 끝내는 것이 좋다.

but before I know, I’m in the third grade.

‘시간이 긴 줄 알았는데 지금 벌써 3학년이다’란 뜻인데 표현이 조금 어색하다. 이때는 복잡하게 쓰지 말고 간단하게 ‘But now I’m in the third grade.’라고 쓰면 된다.

이런 사실이 믿기지 않고 이상하기까지 한 모양인데 ‘novel’ 이라는 단어는 지금은 잘 쓰이지 않는데다 여기선 굳이 쓰지 않아도 ‘unbelievable’ 이란 단어만으로도 충분히 그 의미를 전달할 수 있다.

문장의 첫 단어는 대문자로 쓰고 ‘however’ 뒤에 콤마를 붙이는 것을 잊지 말자. ‘throb fast’라는 의미를 정확히 알기는 힘들지만 앞 문장을 볼 때 아마도 ‘흥분되는 일이기도 하다’란 뜻으로 여겨진다. ‘throb fast’는 자연스러운 표현이 아니고 대신 ‘excited’라는 어휘를 써 ‘However, on the other hand, I am very excited.’라고 표현할 수 있다.

전반적으로 잘 썼다. 단 너무 문장이 길므로 중간에서 한번 끊어주자. 영어 학원과 수학학원을 다녔으니까 ‘institute’는 복수 명사인 ‘institutes’로 써야 한다. but은 생략하고 some으로 새로운 문장을 시작해 쓰되 친구들이 다닌 학원이 딱 한 군데만은 아니므로 여기서도 역시 ‘institutes’가 되어야 한다. ‘하루에’라는 표현은 ‘in’을 생략하고 ‘twelve hours a day’라고 쓰면 된다.

‘자신이 게을렀음을 깨달았다’는 뜻인데 이 문장은 뒤에 있는 ‘till now’을 생략하고 ‘I realized I was very lazy.’라고 써 주는 것이 훨씬 영어다운 표현이 된다. 서희정/D.E.A.R 어린이영어능력개발연구소장
